Sanma Kabayaki Donburi

It was shockingly good. It is teriyaki fish from a can and onion on the rice in a bowl. I had been thinking how to use this can of fish, which was sent from my mom in Japan. I don't eat food from a can that much, except a can of tuna. I made this meal as a trial. It was way better than I expected. It is nothing special, but I am publishing this to remind me. I have to ask my mom to send more of those cans!

Ingredients : serves 2
1 can of Sanma Kabayaki(Teriyaki Pacific Saury)
1 middium onion - slice it thin
1 sheet nori(laver)
a little shichimi(Japanese seasoning ; 7 kinds chilli peppers)
1 tbs cooking sake
1 tbs soy sauce
1 tbs suger
1 tsp dashi(fish broth) powder
1/3 cup water

Preparation :
1. Put all ingredients, except nori and shichimi, in the pot and mix.
2. Put the lid on the pot and cook on low heat
3. When the onion gets tender, add the fish. It is to make the fish warmer and you don't need to stir.
4. Serve rice in a bowl and put ripped nori on the rice.
5. Put onion and fish on #4 and sprinkle shichimi on it.

7:30pm-9:30pm a glass of red wine, beer 350 ml x 1, martini, popcorn
Anytime water 24 oz

Lunch

Dinner
Dinner was not colorful. Hummus is salmon pink, the sauce for the pumpkin is also the same color. I would like to have a beautiful color combination. If I had a leaf of lettus it would have looked better. It was a good anyway. I will use something green for tomorrow's dinner.

Bananeira

Bnaneira has a popular lunch on Saturday. Here, in Sao Paulo, people eat traditional Brazilian food, rice and beans, on Saturday afternoon. The restaurants get crowded around 2pm - 3pm usually. We had dinner here today. Once we take a menu, an appetizer is brought. It is called "Convert" and costs about US$5 for each person. The price depends on the restaurant and you can see the price on the menu. If you don't want it, you can say "No" and you don't need to pay for it, of course. We usually don't take a convert, but it had pao de queijo and it cost less than US$5 per one person and we took it. I would like to try lunch here next time.

Convert(pao de queijo, kashew, butter, dip)

We already had some bread. There was more than the pictore above.

Cuscuz Paulista It was small and I thought I picked the wrong one to satisfy my stomach. Couscous was hidding under the shrimp. There's not a lot but it's good enough. Couscous tasted like coconuts and it was tasty.

BorogodoIt was a little bit greasy for me, but I will be hungry for this plate again. Fried rice had some kind of beans and the red cute guy is pimenta bequinho. I don't know what it is called in English and also don't have it in Japan. It was new for both J and me. It tastes sour and spicy at same time. Stir fry had shredded beef jerky and some vegetables. It tasted like .............. beef jerky! It was good.

Lunch

Dinner

We had Chinese cuisine for dinner. I bought gyoza at Yakisoba House . I like Chinese food. For people out of Asia, Chinese food and Japanese food seem similar, I guess. Let me say something. They are completely different. When I am hungry for Chinese, I never go to a Japanese restaurant. When I am hungry for Japanese, it's vice versa.

Ramen at 11pm....... I know. Don't say anything.

Sushi Den on 25th Feb.

Food : Fried squid arms, Sushi and Sashimi, Ceviche
Drink : one bottle of beer, a glass of sake

I was hungry for sushi since this morning. I decided not to cook tonight and we went to our favorite sushi resutaurant, Sushi Den. As usual, once we took a seat, "Cerveja(beer)?" asked the waiter. YES. This is our restaurant. The ceviche we had was what they gave us for free. They give us something for trial every time. I like it! They are seizing our heart (stomach?). They know what business is.

Cooked Spicy Chinese Cabbage

I don't use any water for this recipe. The Chinese Cabbage is steamed by it's own juice. Shichimi, Japanese seasoning, is good accent for this simple flavor. It is easy to make and tasty!

Ingredients : serves 2 (small portions each)

5 leaves chinese cabbage - cut into large bite-sized

1 tsp sugar

2 tbs soy sauce

1 tbs cooking sake

little Shichimi(you can get it at a Japanese grocery store : 7 kinds of chilli peppers)

Preparation :

1. Put all ingredients in the pot

2. Put the lid on the pot and cook on low heat

3. Cook until chinese cabbage gets tender

Carrots and Wakame with ginger ponzu

This is simple and healthy. I followed my mom's recipe. She used shungiku(a leaf vegetable), but I am not sure if I can get it in Brazil, so I tried it with carrots. It works!

Ingredients : serves 2 (for a small portion each)
1 middle carrot - cut into small rectangles
3 tbs dried wakame(seaweeds)
1 tsp grated ginger
2 tbs Ponzu(you can get it at a Japanese grocery store : soy sauce blended with vineger and citrus juice)
1 pinch sesami seeds

Preparetion:
1. Boil carrots and wakame until carrots are cooked
2. Drain well
3. Dress 2 with ginger and Ponzu
4. Cool it in the fridge for a while to season
5. Add sesami seeds before serving

8:20pm-9:30pm some cookies, chips 50g, a glass of red wine, a bottle of beer 355 ml x 1
Anytime water 24 oz

Lunch
The lunch looks very similar from last night dinner. But it is different. Mine was from my mom's recipe. This recipe is from a Japanese blogger who publishes books of her own recipes. I will buy her books when I visit Japan. It was tasty! Thank you, Izumi-san!

Pastel

Pastel is a Brazilian fried snack which looks like a deep fried pastry. There are lots of variation for the fillings and it is fried just after you order. Be careful not to burn your tongue! People eat it with molho which is like salsa. They put molho on the pastel at each bite.
I got a pastel with beef and cheese fillings at a feira (market) and brought it back home. It is as big as a postcard. It is not stuffed too much and it tastes lighter than I expected, but it was enough for me to survive until lunch time.

Feb. 23

DinnerI felt lazy today and didn't wanna do anything. In hard(just lazy) times like today, I have things to do. Not tomorrow. It should be done today. So I gave myself a treat. I bought me a pastel at the feira(market) after buying groceries, ice cream after walking to a post office in the hot afternoon and bread after .... I was just hungry. I have had a cold and eating is good to recover from cold, right?

Dinner

I made something good for rice. It's easy to make and tasty. The original recipe is this from my favorite blog. The ginger keeps me warm. Unfortunately, it started raining hard at dinner time and we had to close the window. It is summer here and we don't have an air conditioner. It was hot and hummid. I hope the ginger and the steamy room get rid of a cold I have had for a week.

Andiamo

Appetizer
Carpaccio Italia

Insalata Palma

We had light meal, because I ate a lot at lunch. I am not sure if it was enough for J. We liked the food here at Andiamio. We haven't been to an Italian restaurant in Sao Paulo enough to compare, but we enjoyed the meal. First of all, this restaurant has a English menu and we could order what we wanted. That means a lot for us, I think. According to the website of this restaurant, it is a franchise and some shopping malls have this restaurant.

Bulgogi

My Korean friend took me to a Korean restaurant. She says it is the best Korean restaurant in Sao Paulo. The restaurant doesn't look like a restaurant, it is more like a house. The restaurant has private rooms and is a good place to gather with close friends and family. The food was good. I saw some customers and they were all Korean. Well, I was not sure but they looked like Korean. That could be a clue that this restaurant is really good?

8:00pm-10:00pm beer 350 ml x 1, gin & tonic x 1, 2 glasses of red wine
Anytime water 40 oz

Breakfast
I was hungry for Japanese breakfast and made it this morning. Typical Japanese breakfast has rice, miso-soup, some cooked vegitables and grilled salmon. It is just like my dinner. Whenever my mom sees the picture of my dinner, she asks "Is this breakfast?". Actually the breakfast my mom makes is bigger and nicer than my dinner. I miss mom's cooking.

Lunch
Finally, I made Tomato don which I wanted to try for a long time. As I added too much oil, it looked different from the original, my favorite blog "vege dining". The tomato is supposed to be steamed, but mine was fried. It was really good though.

Dinner

Look at this hummus. Isn't it pretty? I don't know the recipe. J made it. I saw he was grilling red peppers. So that salmon pink is from the red peppers not ketchup, I guess. Chef, J, did a really good job for dinner.

Yakisoba House

Yakisoba is a stir-fry noodle with vegitable and meat. At a Japanese restaurant in Sao Paulo, it is not the yakisoba that I expect. It is more like Chinese style. Once you leave Asia, Asian food looks all the same for people. But I have a strong feeling for Japanese food. Here, the restaurant, "Yakisoba House", serves completely ideal Yakisoba. It is located at a food court in a small shopping center. It is not bad to have Chinese style Yakisoba, but if you wanna try real Yakisoba, I recommend Yakisoba House to you.

Kebab Salonu

Kebab Salonu was introduced as a good restaurant in a popular magazine a few days ago. The atomosphere was nice and clean. It looked like a cafe. Beer was served with a very cold glass. That's nice. Food was ok. We prefered falafel of Almanara which is a chane restaurant. We liked the salad.

Haagen-dazs ice cream

Haagen-Dazs ice cream seems fashionable here. In fact, I have seen Haagen-Dazs ice cream at a fancy restaurant. J bought me Haagen-Dazs ice cream(1 pint) yesterday. I just saw the recipt casually and I found that the ice cream was more expensive than a dozen beers. Is it normal? As I usually don't buy ice cream, I don't know the average price. Actually beer is cheap here. I know Haagen-Dazs ice cream is not cheap as regular ice cream. However ice cream could be more expensive than booze??? BTW, a dozen beers cost about US$9!!!!!! (It is not the cheapest beer.)

Dinner

It was Valentine's day today. People don't celebrate Valentine's day today in Brazil. My Brazilian friend told me that they celebrate it in June. It is lucky for us. Because we don't need to reserve a restaurant. J and I were going to eat out downtown, but we felt tired this afternoon and we decided to go to sushi resutaurant near our apartment. Unfortunately the restaurant was closed. It's not surprising. It is carnival holiday here right now. In fact, some of our friends are traveling during this holiday. Outback steak house, which is nearby, was opened, but we were hungry for sushi. So we went to a grocery store and got fresh salmon for dinner. The picture of dinner didn't look great. There's no green. It tastes good though. It was way cheaper than dinner at restaurant. We enjoyed dinner anyway.
